2011 Prospect

Cameron Heyward

DE, Ohio St.
6-5, 294, 5.1-40
Projection: 1st round

Heyward is a guy I was not particularly high on coming into the draft process. He is not explosive and not consistently dominant for a guy who is all but guaranteed to be a first round pick.

2011 Prospect

ronald johnson

WR, USC
5-11, 185, 4.46-40
Projection: 6th round

Is a smooth, fluid athlete with good agility. Excellent route runner who knows how to get open. Glides in and out of his breaks and knows how to set up defenders.

2011 Prospect

Joseph LeFeged

S, Rutgers
6-0, 210, 4.58-40
Projection: 6th round

LeFeged (pronounced Le-fedge) had an excellent career at Rutgers and was the team’s most valuable player in 2010 and a team captain. He is quick, athletic and very productive. He is better in coverage than run support and brings extra value as a returner.

2011 Prospect

Jonathan Cornell

ILB, Ole Miss
6-1, 235, 4.7-40
Projection: 7th round

Brad Smith, James Ihedigbo and Eric Smith are the Jets’ best special teams players but all three are potential free agents. The team would like to resign them all but that may not be possible and they may be looking for a special teamer in the draft to hedge their bets.

2011 Prospect

G, Villanova
6-4, 320, 5.3-40
Projection: 2nd round

With Ijalana projected to come off the board in the second round and the Jets without a second round pick, the chances are slim he will be playing in green and white but the Jets are in prime position to move down and if they did, Ijalana would make a lot of sense.

2011 Prospect

Bilal Powell

RB, Louisville
5-10, 204, 4.52-40
Projection: 7th round

Powell is a lesser known NFL prospect from the Big East but he really turned it on in his senior season and made a lot of big plays. He scored 11 rushing TD’s (3 receiving) and ran for a 6.5-yard average. He lacks the great lateral movement of a feature back but makes up for it with outstanding vision and instincts.

2011 Prospect

Shareece Wright

CB, USC
5-11, 185, 4.51-40
Projection: 5th round

Wright is a smart, instinctive corner who has excellent anticipation and does a nice job reading the quarterback. He lacks the long speed and fluid hips to develop into a starter but I see him as a good fit as a nickel back. He is aggressive at the line and closes quickly on balls in front of him, two traits that are essential for a nickel.

2011 Prospect

Luke Stocker

TE, Tennessee
6-5, 257, 4.69-40
Projection: 5th round

Stocker will not wow you with athletic ability but he has above average speed for the position and possesses many of the qualities you look for in a traditional tight end. The Jets had to release Ben Hartsock in March because he was due a $1.6 million salary this year. While they would like to bring him back at the league’s minimum, he may sign elsewhere. He has been a very reliable run blocker since they signed him in 2009 but at 30 years old, they may go in another direction.

2011 Prospect

Zach Hurd

G, Connecticut
6-6, 320, 5.2-40
Projection: 6th round

The later rounds are all about getting value and Hurd would be a good value pick if he was still on the board in round 6. The Jets might not have a strong need at the position but he is a player who fits in their power rushing attack and is someone with whom Bill Callahan can work.

2011 Draft

Jabaal Sheard

Sheard is moving up.

The Jets have had the fewest picks in the draft of any team over the last five years. They had 27 (5.4 per year) during that span while the league average was 40 (8 per year). Mike Tannenbaum’s aggressive model of moving up and making trades has helped them build one of the more talented rosters in the league but their depth has suffered.

They have been fortunate to avoid major injuries to key players but that string of luck may run out. This year they have a chance to add more bodies with six picks overall (their most since 2008). They have a good chance to fortify their roster, particularly on defense.
