Priority Free Agents

Mark Herzlich

Herzlich is a fiery competitor.

Every year there are players who are expected to be drafted but for a variety of reasons never come off the board. There were a few this year, however, that really surprised me.

Kendric Burney was one of them. He was a solid and productive corner for the Tar Heels who was expected to be drafted in the middle rounds but no team was interested enough to select him.

He ran a slow 40-time (in the low 4.7’s) and that is all it takes to drop a corner out of the running. But usually there are teams that see through that and know the guy plays faster on the field.

Burney is one guy who will make the team that brings him in very happy they did. He has a future as a man-cover, nickel corner and he’d be a perfect fit for the Jets.

There were also two safeties, Rutger’s Joe LeFeged (pronounced Le-fedge) and DeAndre McDaniel who both have ability and can contribute. At 6-0, 210 LeFeged has a nice combination of size and speed and at a minimum could be a good special teamer with the ability to block kicks.

McDaniel stands 6-0, 217 and while he lacks speed, he makes up for it with good size, strength and instincts. He could be an effective in the box safety.

Another guy everyone wanted to be drafted was linebacker Mark Herzlich (6-4, 244) from Boston College. Unfortunately he was not selected.

Herzlich is still coming back from a very aggressive form of cancer. He lost a ton of weight and all his explosiveness but I believe, in time, he will get back to his high level of play.

He may never be as powerful as he once was but he still has a lot of ability and is just one of those inspirational guys who seems to boost the intensity level of his entire team.

Herzlich is someone you want in your locker room. He will commit himself to being a solid special teamer in order to make a roster and then will direct his energy at becoming a starter, which I believe is in his future.

Herzlich would be a great free agent pick up. He has great instincts, uses solid technique and once he is back to full strength, could bring some playmaking ability at linebacker.

I had all four of these guys on my board going into the draft and believe they will be snatched up once the free agent signing period begins.
