Sanchez' Struggles

Sanchez' problems are mostly mental.

The Jets offense struggled at times, particularly in the first half, because Sanchez struggled with his accuracy. He was an atrocious 3-14 on third down but he does not appear to have major problems with his throwing mechanics.

His release point, throwing motion and weight distribution look pretty good which is why I believe his problems are more mental. He is thinking too much and not trusting his instincts.

His poor outing against New Orleans and his five-interception performance against Buffalo have caused him to think too much and he is trying to be too perfect as a result.

In time the game will slow down for him but right now he looks uncomfortable in the pocket. Earlier in the season he showed great footwork, avoiding the rush and finding open throwing lanes. Now he is freezing when he feels pressure.

He must return to keeping his eyes down field and trusting his instincts to move within the pocket. When he starts doing that his accuracy should return but right now he is tough to watch.

He missed numerous open receivers yesterday and it bogged down the offense.

He did not give his receiver a chance when he launched a desperation pass in the end zone on his final play. No doubt it was a tough situation. He had no one open and had to make something happen but he has to keep that ball in play to have a chance.

Sanchez under threw Keller on his touchdown and on Edwards’ fade for a two point conversion try. He also over threw Keller when he was wide open on another two-pointer.

He missed a wide open Jerricho Cotchery on an easy in-cut that would have converted a third and eight. He mishandled a shotgun snap and almost threw a “pick-six” when he floated a ball to Edwards at the far end of the field when the Jets were down near the goal line.

All these mistakes add up and have slowed the offense’s progress but then again we knew this would happen. As talented as Sanchez is, he is going to continue to make mistakes. Hopefully he will cut down on them in the second half.

The week off should serve him well. He is pressing and needs to relax in order to get on a roll.
